Can you mount SMB-Shares in the shell?
( mount -t smbfs //hostname/smbshare /mnt/smb -o username=... )

If no then try to compile the SMBFS-Module of your current Kernel.
Otherwise - well .. i'd suggest to try gnomba once to browse your
smb network...
