Installing GTK Deletes XFce?

I'm trying to compile XnotesPlus, and it requires gtk+ 1.2. I only had
2.0 on my system, so I used Synaptic (GUI .deb manager) to install 1.2.
Imagine my surprise when it said this:
Removing xfce4 ...
Removing xfce4-mcs-plugins ...
Removing xfce4-mcs-manager ..
Sure enough, when I logged on again, xfce was broken. That's bad enough,
but what's even worse, after recompiling RC2 all over again, it's still
broken.
Any idea how I can get my preferred wm back again (well, I do still
have xfce3)?
