I believe that if you don't install GNOME or KDE then you just get
xdm. I haven't looked to see if kdm needs all the kde bloat in order to
run but I know that GNOME does. I use gdm only because I also use
Evolution (and thus have all the GNOME crap^H^H^H^H stuff installed).
wdm might be a good option.
