I don't know either, but you might want to look in the system startup
scripts to see what starts xdm/kdm/gdm, and how you might get it to
start a window manager instead.

This might involve some jiggery pokery to give the display to your
chosen user and have the session running as that user (you don't want
the whole lot running as root, so use the 'su' command to launch the
session).

Some things to look at:

- /etc/inittab
- /etc/rc.local
- files in /etc/rc.d
- files in /etc/X11/init
- files in /etc/X11/xdm
