This is rapidly moving out my area of expertise but as far as I know not a
lot of work has been done on xfdeskmenu since I last checked it out. I WAS
wrong above the . file xfdeskmenu uses is ~/.xfdeskmenurc . Did you edit
the example.xfdeskmenurc file from the source and place it at
~/.xfdeskmenurc? There's a good chance that this has nothing to do with
it, but it may so I mention it.
