M-9 and src.rpm error message

trying to integrate xfce into mandrake 9 with Oliver's 
src.rpm....

 # rpm --rebuild xfce-3.8.18-1.src.rpm

ends with......

checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.6... yes
checking for XpmReadFileToXpmImage in -lXpm... no
configure: error: libXpm not found
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.33494 (%build)


RPM build errors:
    Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.33494 (%build)

I do have libxpm4-3.4k-21mdk installed.....
I seem to remember having this happen previously but 
forget what the solution was...

the mandrake "bastardized" version does work...
(as well as it usually does, which means so/so) ;o)
