Optional would be the name of the game.   What appeals to me might be
incredibly offensive to others.

I almost never launch applications.  I have four desktops set like I
want them, and when I shutdown, they always come back where I left
them.  I'm not much of an icon person.  If I need to launch a new app,
I do it from the run menu.  The panel is just unused space on the
screen for me.
