Aside from codability questions, it kills the whole "lightweight' label
-- that sort of thing takes memory and CPU cycles.

The Gnome panel can do what you're asking - try starting it up and
playing with its options. If you like it a lot you can run it next to
the XFce panel or even in place of the XFce panel.
