taskbar buttons

Did I imagine this, or didn't the taskbar buttons used to be only as wide
as they needed to be up to a max?  Now they're all the same size, which,
frankly, makes the taskbar look far too much like the other "OS" version.  
Whether I imagined it or not, I'd like my 'pine' button (e.g.) to be just
wide enough for 'pine' and not have a lot of unnecessary whitespace.  (It
_was_ that way before, wasn't it??  My memory may be failing me :)
