An enthusiastic yes, by all means.
Here's my method:
go to http://www.xfce.org/download.html#TOP
get the "selected" CVS snapshot.
upzip/untar it and cd to xfce directory
./configure --enable-taskbar
make
su
dpkg -r xfce (to get rid of debian package)
make install
init 3
login as user
xfce_setup
startx (or startxfce)
