make error on mandrake 9

i only thought it works, cause the make process ran for a while, but then:
aclocal.m4:73: error: Autoconf version 2.54 or higher is required
aclocal.m4:73: the top level
autoheader-2.5x: autom4te failed with exit status: 1
 at /usr/bin/autoheader-2.5x line 163
make: *** [config.h.in] Error 1

any suggestions?
