Just about to trash this, but then I noticed that your experience is
not my experience, so ...

mozilla 1.2.1 comes back aok, and they've even removed the miserable
feature of prompting for a profile if you open a second copy, and
mozilla 'openurl(%s,new-tab)'  works great for opening up urls from a
mailer without creating a second copy.
