zombies

for the archives...

rebooting fixed it, and after puzzling over that for a while I figured
out why. I had restarted X after my various font-related changes, but I
hadn't restarted XFS. Rebooting restarted all services, et voila.

I still don't know why the problem only ocurred in XFce, with or without
anti-aliasing support compiled in.
