Backdrops in .xpm format

I did no thing magical here.  Just downloaded the Tux/XP (right click in
galeon, save image as) to my home dir.  Opened the settings/backdrop
window in XFce then browsed to my home dir.  

I wonder, just a thought from a non-programmer, do you have recent
version of libjpeg installed?
