I just updated from 3.8.15 (also compiled from src.rpm) and xftree worked
with 3.8.15. I found no other earlier versions on my system. I've tried
rebuilding xftree twice now with no improvement.

I just restored the binary xftree from 3.8.15 and it works as it should
under 3.8.16.
