It blanks your monitor, sends it to standby or poweroff mode to save energy.

Can be set as an option in your XF86Config file, could be a checkbox in your 
xscreensaver options, could be a line in you xinitrc file like "xset +dpms"
To see if it's on, do a "xset -q"
