Event sounds are properly set up on your system, correct? It requires a GTK
module to be loaded, but it may somehow trigger your bug in case of failure.

$ echo $GTK_MODULES
canberra-gtk-module

Check if unloading the module helps:
$ xfdesktop --quit; GTK_MODULES= xfdesktop
