Regarding the feature in dolphin:

The dolphin solution is more like the way you propose:

A file called ".directory" is added to a folder which stores the path to the
used image. here an example:

> [Desktop Entry]
> Icon=/home/schwinn/Bilder/misc/me/kopf.png
Pro: It is not required to add another gvfs dependency
Con: Only possibly to have custom icons for folders
