As for --sysconfdir, AFAIK if you don't set it the default is $PREFIX/etc
what in most cases means /usr/etc and its not what most people want
For --enable-maintainer-mode it seems to compile things usual for beta
testers and the like, but not for common users. Since xfce is in beta stages
all compilations should be done with that option on.
Since I'm not a xfce programmer, neither know inner doings of autotools I
can't provide more details....
