I have some experience with the MIME spec over at freedesktop.org.
It's not perfect, but it does match the GTK file chooser, and is
getting used other places, so it's best to go with it.

When I get back from my honeymoon, I'm going to hack on that, as I
can. I can't promise anything, but Thunar has been hyped to high
heaven. It's time someone started writing it.
