How do I use GNU AutoTools?

Hi. I hope this isn't too off-topic, but I came from this forum thread
<https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=67991#p67991> hoping to find out
how to use autotools for a fork of XFCE that I was hoping to make. I have a
few questions:

   1. Is it ok if I just use CMake or is there a reason that XFCE uses
   autotools (is the reason just that CMake wasn't available when XFCE was
   created?)
   2. If CMake is a bad option, how do I actually use autotools?
