Hi Simon,

I would agree with Tim. Best start by creating/fixing bugs by uploading
patches.

You may want to idle in the irc channel #xfce-dev on freenode e.g. to
ask for review / testing of your patches and to get them pushed.

After a while, when people are tired to push your work,  you may get
ssh-keys to push on your own :)
