That's one of (many) bugs in the gstreamer pulseaudio backend,
you can't really use xfce4-mixer when pulseaudio is running,
there are many more things broken.
If somebody wants to improve the situation here, then please help
Andrzej to finish his pulseaudio panel plugin that he linked in
the above thread[*] because most distros will likely drop
xfce4-mixer anyway in the near future together with the
deprecated gstreamer 0.10.
