Sounds similar to my project to port the GNOME Hardware Monitor
applet: https://github.com/OmegaPhil/hardware-monitor-applet

Just saying for reference. I'll also be trying to get it upstream at
some point, the current stall is cowdancer not being in Debian Testing
- - however if yours gets into Goodies, then I guess my project would be
a dupe and wouldn't be allowed? That would save me some hassle ;)
