Removal of the location button

While I agree it looks more cluttered and wastes horizontal space, the
solution in firefox also hides this feature. I didn't even know the
history appears when you hold down the mouse button, I only knew you
could access the history by right-clicking on the button. But usually I
just use the back/forward on the mouse or draw gestures.

Were you not searching for a solution to get rid of the location button,
my proposal would have made thunar's UI simpler by adding that function
to the home button, especially when you intend it to work like firefox
(single click home, hold down for other locations). Or so I thought.
