recommended OS for building XFCE

Hello,

Which distribution would the developers recommend for doing
development work with XFCE? (i.e. building XFCE and familiarising
myself with the source?)

I'm looking for the one that'll give me the least problems with
respect to required dependent libraries / incompatible libraries /
etc. My own preference would be either Centos (5.5) or Ubuntu - which
would be easier?
