just for the records:
I spend a little more time on this and I managed to get it working.
The above errors were, as expected, due my very custom setup,
obviously. I fixed them by defining most of the environment variable to
set the paths in my shell config, for some reason they didn't work in
~/.xsession. And I removed $prefix/etc from the $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS
variable. Not exactly sure whether this affected the whole thing but it
was wrong anyway.
So, at least on Debian, users can still use Xfce with full powers
without a login manager :).
