Notifications not working with libnotify-0.5.2-1

Good point, I forgot about that. In Debian we have two patches against
0.1.0 to make it build against new libnotify.

Those patches are findable at
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-xfce/goodies/tags/xfce4-notifyd/0.1.0-5/debian/patches/

There's a 0.1 branch too, which may lead to a 0.1.1 release, which
should work against new libnotify.
