How to restart Xfce?

Thanks for the reply.  There is no file /etc/init.d/gdm on the system.  Is that file supposed to be installed when Xfce is the desktop?

This will also work for xfce.

The reason why an ssh session might still be alive when the desktop is frozen, is that just the graphical session is frozen up, the rest of the computer is still working fine. So the issue you are having is not really an Xfce one, but rather an X one.
