Whatever happened to: "Merging Task List + System Tray + Program Launcher applets"?

I have played with projects that implement a combination of tasks and
launchers, such as avant window manager, which I don't like as such,
but I do like the idea. I also doubt very much that system tray icons
make any sense in that context.

I actually even wrote some experimental code. But I really need to find
time to make it useful. Maybe I find that time at some point...
