Where to start? Implementing independent workspace switching with Xinerama

I have rather limited knowledge of the way xinerama and multi-head
displays work, but why is it important to use xinerama at all? Why not
just have the two screens show any two out of a single set of
workspaces? I remember hearing that moving windows between different
screens was a problem with multi-head, but could that be done with WM
support instead? AFAIK xinerama has the big disadvantage that you
can't add and remove screens on the fly, which is very important for
laptops. Just my $0.02.
