Hmm... though it's possible it's a timing issue or race condition.  With
the compositor enabled on my laptop (since I'm not using a
HW-accelerated driver), the desktop isn't quite as snappy.  Switching
workspaces might introduce some weird timing dependencies that triggers
the problem.
