First the plugins for 4.2 are unusable for 4.4 and therefore need to be
ported if you want to use them.  I get into a panel plugin very
recently and all I did was looking at new plugins.  Btw. the
xfce4-mpc-plugin[1], xfce4-wavelan-plugin[2] and the testplugin[3].
There are many other plugins to look at to start one.

Take a look at the API[4] to understand the xfce_panel_* functions.
