Where is my menu file?

Well AFAIK, if xfce doesn't find the menu file on the home dir, it searches
de default system menu, located in $sysconfdir/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml
(as stated in #7 of the FAQ), thats what's probably happening in your case.
