'Empty' entries in systemtray(?)

bt-applet and nm-applet still don't show any icons, they only add ~3px 
of empty space to the systray.

Maybe their icons are missing? Can an application put an icon in the 
systray without an icon or is it substituted with an 'unknown_icon'-icon?
