Could be related to this bug:

The panel doesn't set its struts correctly when orientation changes, and xfwm4 updates the maximized windows as the struts are updated. Maybe the computed workarea with broken struts is too small and cause a crash in the applications, but that proves a weakness in the applications or their toolkit.
