Xarchiver weird "opening large rar archives" problem

Hi,
we have a problem in the current svn xarchiver code about opening
large rar archives. The code that reads the output from the spawned
archiver is exact the same for all the archive types. When opening
large rar archives the EOF condition is met immediately after the rar
copyright message and nothing is read anymore from the output channel
since this is closed because of the EOF condition.
This only happens with rar large archives. Small ones work as expected
and so the other types currently supported ( tar and zip even large).
Could please someone help us in discovering why it behaves like this ?
Thanks,
