I know - I just wanted to know your stance on this.

I can generate plenty of 'meeting.ics' invitation attachments (files) to 
work on that will display the structure of these files. The nice thing 
would be that it would allow any mail application to spawn orage with 
them and insert events into the calendar.

they're plaintext (text/calendar mime type) files.

The only problem is that thunderbird currently hides them :^(

I'll bugzilla this later.
