Nope.  Assuming you've successfully run autogen.sh, it should just work.
 Check the end of configure output; it should say something to the
effect that it's enabled.  grep config.h to make sure
ENABLE_WINDOW_ICONS is #defined as 1.

Stupid question: you *do* have windows minimised on the workspace you're
using, right?  Otherwise there's nothing to show up...
