icons in the taskbar

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but how hard would it be to make it
possible to pick an icon for a given application to be shown in the
taskbar ? I have a lot of applications open so showing their names fills
my task bar while showing only icons gives me a lot of identical default
icons which makes it hard to find the correct one. Linking an application
that does not provides it's proper icon with a custom icon to be shown in
the taskbar would be great !
