I'll have to look into this, but yes, this should be the best method. 
Appfinder is now a separate widget, so I could perhaps even integrate it 
into the dialog (as an alternative file chooser button?).

DND from .desktop files should work best currently and from executables 
I think, but there's a lot of room for improvement here.
