Apart from personal preference, i wanted it to be more like familiar 
widgets such as browser back/forward buttons or toolbar buttons with a 
menu. Also, if anyone cares, it makes the button always have the benefit 
of Fitt's law, by being on the edge of the screen.

The global popup position option wouldn't be near my top 100 of most 
useful options.
