It can be turned on (window mode for main window). All my MPlayer skins  
use that.
Locate "skin" file of theme that you use (here it's in  
usr/share/mplayer/Skin/whatever_theme_you_use), and "decoration=enable"  
to movieplayer section, so it looks like this:

------------------------------------------
section        = movieplayer

   window       = main
     decoration = enable
------------------------------------

Check out, for example, my Clearlooks-mplayer skin, it looks just like  
regular gtk2 app :-)
