Bah, that's hardly a reason for doing the wrong thing with sonames.
Debian gets this right exactly so it can have different versions of
different libraries in its distributions.  That doesn't have anything to
do with the delays in its release.

It's not a maintenance nightmare for packagers if upstream gets it right.
