Xfce4-terminal : crash

i had a look at the Xfce site, wh has excellent instructions for using CVS
(wh i had never used before & have just emerged on Gentoo),
& i've downloaded the latest version of Xfce4-terminal & installed it.
it starts w/o any problem, but it's unusable due to the colors:
the background is black & even white comes across as a dark grey.
i realise it's a work v much in progress & am in no way complaining,
but an urgent need is to add some choice of colors to the settings manager:
i always work w a white/yellow background & black/colored foreground.
