Unable to set transparent background

hmm, that seems odd that the WM would make a difference.  that may be my 
fault, as xfdesktop isn't setting _XROOTPMAP_ID anymore (i think).  i'll 
re-add that; look for the commit message.

unfortunately, xchat crashes for me when i enable transparency, so i 
can't test.
