trouble with XFce4 cvs version installed in custom directory (panel icons)

Aha.. i've got icons now :)

$ mkdir ~/.xfce4/preferences 
and a restart to XFce icons appear :)

It seems that whatever part of Xfce4 should set up the configuration dir
doesn't do it quite right? I figured it out when i found out that my
wallpaper settings were lost every time ;)
