yes, this is an irritating feature of many menus,
but it's not confined to Xfce: i just checked Gqview & Kate
-- ie apps based respectively on pure Gtk & Qt --
& there are examples of invisible unchecked boxes in both 'view' menus.
it wb a definite leg-up for Xfce, if it showed all boxes as Mist does.
