Means it cannot find the Sound Volume Control Device.

Means it exited? eeeeek !

Can you try starting xfce-mcs-manager manually and through gdb with:

gdb xfce-mcs-manager
run --no-daemon-debug

There is a bug report about the sound settings :
http://bugs.xfce.org/view_bug_page.php?f_id=0000211

Maybe its something similar ? Or does it just crash right away ?

Also, which gtk and glib version do you use ?
