I'm against such options. Configure options make sense to
activate/deactivate features that depend on the system configuration
like available libraries or the operating systems.

But there's no advantage for both the user and the developer to make a
normal configuration option at compile time. The user who wants that
feature has to re-compile the entire source code only to activate a
little (but nice) feature.

I vote for a hidden configuration option or for a dialog box.
